Thinking About Quitting Your Job? 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Hasty Career Decision

We've all been there at some point. It was a Wednesday afternoon and he had had enough. Enough of stressing about whether the project was going to work out or not, too many hours sweating over the detail, palpitations and worrying whether he was having a heart attack!
He messaged me "Nicky, should I stay or should I go?"
If you find yourself wondering this, here are 5 questions (and a bonus one!) to ask yourself:
1. Is your job making you physically ill or causing serious emotional distress?
We all get stressed-out sometimes during busy days or big projects, but if your physical or emotional health is regularly or always affected by your job then something needs to change.
2. Is there room to advance in your job or workplace?
We all need a sense of growth to keep us moving forward, develop new skills and abilities. Is there something you can grow into in your job with new responsibilities, or advance into a more senior position, or even take a side-wise step into something new you would like to try? If you find yourself answering ‘no’ to this question, watch that you are not just accepting that this is how it is without testing first! I have coached plenty of people who answer ‘no’ to this question, and then when challenged to have the conversation with their manager and / or HR find that there are opportunities available to them, they just hadn’t asked before.
3. Do you have a good relationship with your boss?
When there is mutual respect between the two of you, life is good. If you don’t see eye-to-eye with your boss but everything else in your job is good, is there something you can do to improve the relationship?
If the relationship with your boss makes your life miserable and there are other things too you are seriously unhappy about then something needs to change.
4. Do you get along with your co-workers?
We spend a lot of our time in a week with co-workers so getting along with them is important. Are there just a couple of people that rub you up the wrong way, or is it deeper and broader than that?
5. What’s most aggravating about your job?
Maybe it’s just one thing and you can change how you deal with it. Remember there are always niggly things in any job. If it’s many things together or you find yourself getting easily annoyed you have two options – change how you deal with it, or change the environment.
6. (Bonus Question!) What brought you to this post?
If you have this question of ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go?’ what prompted it at this particular time? Having to answer this question will keep you from doing something you might regret later! If you’ve just completed a particularly difficult project or you are longing for a change, it may just be you need a break.
On the other hand, if you’ve answered ‘yes’ to more than a couple of the questions above, have been considering a move for a while, then now might be the right time to take action and move.
