“Nicky, I feel like I’ve been ‘flip-flopping’ from one thing to the next and can’t stick to any one career choice”. He had a great day job that he knew wasn’t where he ultimately wanted to be and so over the years he had invested in many courses to do with the things he loved; nutrition, personal trainer, NLP and coaching. But he now found himself at a point in his life where he felt he wasn’t getting anywhere fast and time was ticking by.
Disappointed in his progress he reached out to me for help.
During our first session of working together it became clear that he had a huge vision for centres that incorporated all the elements that he had been studying. Even his ‘day-job’ was equipping him with crucial skills to bring about his vision - developing business cases, project management and governance.
His sense of ‘flip-flopping’ from one thing to the next clearly wasn’t accurate. It turns out it was a phrase someone close to him had used in a heated exchange, and it had stuck with him.
He was excited as he re-engaged with a vision he had held for so long.
But this was quickly replaced with overwhelm and doubt. This was what was truly troubling him.
“It just seems so big”, he said. “where do I start?”.
Knowing that life presents us with opportunities to support us with our visions and missions, we looked at where the opportunities existed to take a next step. We found one in the shape of a friend who had asked him some time ago to work with him on setting up a gym. A great opportunity to learn the business and grow his own from there. We uncovered other opportunities for resources and potential investors which also existed within his network that he could tap into at a later date.
Armed with clear action steps, a shift in his thinking, he is now back on the path of realising his vision. He is re-building trust in himself by making a decision to see his vision through and persist by taking action.
So, what can we learn from this story?
If you find yourself stuck, here are five steps to move you forward:
- Get clarity around what the real issue is - if you need some help to talk this through, find someone who is going to be objective and can ask some great questions to give you insight into what is really going on. I would be more than happy to help.
- Watch what you choose to believe – if there are people you are close to that label your experience in unhelpful ways, choose not to believe it. It is only their opinion.
- If you have a big vision which scares the pants off of you – break it down into chunks you can handle. Identify a first action step you can take and the opportunities that exist in your network that can help you bring it about.
- Re-build trust in yourself – make a decision, a commitment to yourself to do everything you possibly can to bring this about. If its that important to you, make sure your actions demonstrate this. Persist, learn and correct as you go on your way.
- Long term satisfaction over short term gratification – there are probably things you are doing every week that eat up time but don’t contribute to your vision. Go for long term satisfaction rather than short term gratification and you’ll soon see progress.
These five steps will quickly move you forward in the right direction for you. No more avoidance!
