Are You Stuck in the ‘Be Reasonable’ Trap?
My parents grew up in the UK during the Second World War and experienced first-hand a lack of certain foods, clothing and other things that were rationed for years beyond the war.
What that meant for me and probably most of my generation, was strong messages from my parents of “don’t ask and never take more than you need”, “be reasonable in what you ask for”. All based on an idea of lack of resources.
What messages did you grow up with that have left you in the ‘Be Reasonable’ Trap, putting a limit on your goals, going for what you think you can have, what seems reasonable instead of what you truly want.
When I ask business owners what they truly want for their business and their lives, many struggle to answer that question.
Some are even shy to say out loud their desire to build something really big, maybe an empire, as if it’s not possible for them, or they will be judged and found wanting.
But if there really was a lack of resources and opportunities around us, how come so many people successfully build multi-million- and billion-dollar companies?
How come so many people have made such significant impact in their communities?
They’ve broken out of the ‘Be Reasonable’ Trap.
They see the universe as being truly abundant and full of opportunities and possibilities.
And, they don’t give a damn how they will be judged – no shame or guilt here.
They don’t try to avoid failure. They accept that it comes with the territory of going to the edge of what is possible for them. They see failure as an opportunity to learn and improve.
So how do you avoid the ‘Be Reasonable’ Trap?
Think about the opposite and have some fun with it - Be outrageous. Be extravagant. Be unlimited.
What thoughts and ideas come to you?
Go within and be honest with yourself about what you truly want.
Leave aside any thoughts of how do I…., what if……, what will people think.
Leave aside any judgments, of possible guilt or shame.
Write what you truly want down. Draw it. Say it out loud.
How does that feel?
Share it with someone that you know will understand, and help you craft this into a vision for your future.
