First you make your habits and then your habits make you. So, you want to make sure you are adopting great habits and there is one key habit that all successful people share. You see they don’t rely on feeling motivated to do something. They are not waiting for ‘the urge’ or that sense of passion or being in the flow.
Wondering what the one key habit is?
Do what you hate and do what you hate first.
If you are anything like me, when you look through your ‘to-do’ list there are probably things on there that you really don’t enjoy. It may be that they get pushed to the bottom of the list, “oh I’ll get to that tomorrow…” and tomorrow never quite comes??
Well, what successful people do and I’ve adopted too, is they do the things they least like first. Get it out the way, done, sorted, so they can then focus on the things they enjoy more.
The thing is, motivation kicks in once you begin something so even if at first you don’t enjoy it, how you feel about it starts to change. Think about how you feel once you’ve set up a routine of going to the gym on a regular basis.
I can remember taking on a second job in my early 20s to pay for the much-needed new roof on my first house. That job involved cold calling as well as follow-up calls to warm leads. The follow-up calls were always easier and often fun conversations compared to the cold calls.
I can remember adopting the habit of doing the thing I like least in this job – the cold calls.
We had certain targets we needed to meet which meant a certain number of cold calls, and a certain number of follow-up calls. I would make a point of doing all my cold calls first, get it done and out the way, then focus on the much more enjoyable follow-up calls. It turned out that I became one of the most productive and effective people in the company because of this one habit I used.
So, what are the things you avoid doing, or leave until you realise you have yet again run out of time to complete it?
Maybe it’s a conversation you are dreading, or something where you need to take a risk and do something different? It could be sorting out your finances, doing the paperwork.
What would it be for you?
Everyday, when you write the list of things you need to do, make a point of doing the thing you least want to do first. Then its out the way, you can forget about it and get on with the rest of your day. See what a difference this makes to your life as it becomes a habit.
Aristotle said:
“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation.”
This one habit alone will take you to excellence as you leave behind those who are unwilling to do the things they find difficult or uncomfortable / don’t like.
