Just Make Sure Your Aim Is Good

Archery. A totally new sport for me at the age of 15 on a summer camp.
Like most kids, I’d made a bow and arrows out of branches and a bit of string, pretended to be one of Robin Hoods’ tribe in the woods near our home. But that was years ago, and wasn’t very successful.
This archery bow was completely different - so precise and technical looking. I was a little nervous.
My turn came around.
“How do I…”
“Don’t worry about the how. Just make sure your aim is good.” My instructor said.
I took my position, placed the arrow in the bow, pulled back the string and my first attempt ended up in the straw bales well away from the target.
In my head I was still trying to work out ‘how’ I do this.
“Relax” he said.
I breathed, relaxed. Thought about “just make sure your aim is good”, and I hit the red area of the target! Not quite the yellow bullseye, but I was happy.
Things improved from there.
I remember being curious that focusing on how didn’t seem to work, but if I just made sure my aim was good, the ‘how’ took care of itself.
This memory came flooding back years later when I was reading Timothy Gallwey’s book The Inner Game of Tennis. He coached people to play tennis in a totally unconventional way. Not by technique, the ‘how’, but by totally focusing on the ball and just let your body do what felt right to be able to hit it with the racket.
This was so successful he went on and coached in other sports such as golf.
It’s another version of “just make sure your aim is good”.
We seem to have an innate understanding of what we need to do when we let go of the need to know how, and focus on the outcome we want. And if it doesn’t work, we have the capability to tweak it until it works.
But somehow, the mainstream focus on knowing ‘how’ has led to many people not being able to choose a goal without evaluating simultaneously their resources and personal repertoire of skills to see if they have what it takes to reach the objective.
The ‘how’ almost becomes a screening device to select an appropriate goal for themselves.
That is so limiting. It keeps you playing small in your life.
What if you focus on what you want instead of what you can reasonably expect to get?
What if you defined your goal, not worrying about everything involved in getting there?
Technique, methodology, the process you will need to follow will come to you.
Just make sure your aim is good.
Open yourself to the unexpected and proceed. You don’t have to know how you are going to get there, but you must know where you want to go.
