“I can’t believe how far I’ve come in the past 10 weeks.” My client is thrilled with how much progress he has made on getting his business up and running; premises sorted, packages sorted, marketing materials sorted, and clients signing up. He’d been struggling for 10 years prior to this to make any progress and had almost given up. He’s achieved more in the past 10 weeks than he had in 10 years!
So, what’s made the difference?
We used the secrets that successful people use time and time again to achieve their goals. Whereas previously his mind had been acting as a brake on progress, we got his mind working for him in the direction of his goals, helping him take the actions needed to be successful. You can have great goals, a clear vision of what you want to achieve but all this is futile if you don’t understand how to get your mind working to take the necessary actions to be successful.
Here’s a summary of the 4 principles we used:
- Your mind only does what it thinks you want, moving you towards something it thinks you find pleasurable and away from things that cause pain, in order to keep you safe. So the language you use when you are talking to yourself makes all the difference in the world. If you tell yourself an activity is ‘killing’ you, you would rather ‘be dead’ than do this, your mind is going to do everything it can to make sure you don’t do the activity. If there are actions that you need to take to achieve the goals you want, make sure the language you use around these actions is focused on wanting it, choosing to do this, seeing yourself as a winner when you take these actions.
- Your mind is wired to keep returning to what feels familiar and to keep rejecting what is unfamiliar. But the thing is, the mind doesn’t know good from bad and some of your habits that are very familiar, are not good for you; it could be smoking, eating junk food, any number of things. So if you have goals you want to achieve and the necessary actions are unfamiliar, you need to make what is unfamiliar feel familiar. When you find yourself thinking or saying to yourself “it’s hard”, “it’s difficult”, change your language to “it’s unfamiliar and I can make it familiar”. The way to make something familiar is through repetition, and it becomes easier over time as it becomes more familiar.
- Do what you hate and do what you hate first. It may be exercising, making a particular phone call, sorting out your paperwork. Get it done, out the way and then you can move onto more enjoyable tasks during your day, free from that guilty feeling of avoiding something that needs to be done.
- Take action every single day in the direction of your goals. The action may be small but do something 7 days a week towards your goals. The problem with not taking action every day is that it is easy to say “oh I’ll do that tomorrow” but if you’ve made a commitment to take action everyday you just get on and do it regardless.
Understanding and applying specific strategies associated with these four principles means that you can be a winner. By paying attention and taking action everyday, being consistent and making that commitment to yourself, success is yours for the taking.
