The Power of the Right Question at the Right Time

After yet another frustrating week at work, I was ready for anything but more of the same. I booked myself on a personal development programme in the Bahamas, and I was off...
Two weeks immersed in a very different environment - away from the grey skies of the UK, the noise of an open-plan office, the drama of tight deadlines and projects veering off-course, the never-ending meetings with agendas that seem to repeat themselves.
All of that left way behind.
This was bliss.
Me-time.
A time to get some clarity on what I wanted for the next chapter of my life.
I wasn't sure how or what it would be, but at the age of 36, I was ready for a change.
And it came from a simple sounding question which rocked the very foundation of my world.
The right question at the right time.
We were a small group of 11.
The teacher leaned forward, looked me in the eye and said...
"Do you like where you live?"
Hmm. What a question to ask when I'm on a beautiful island with blue skies, white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and a warmth of sunshine that wrapped round me like a cosy blanket.
Such a different environment to the grey-skies of the UK I'd left behind.
I leaned back and muttered something unintelligible.
I have no idea what was taught the remainder of that session. I just knew that something deep had been awaken within me.
This question took me right back to when I was 12/13 playing a boardgame with my younger sister. It had a map of the world and we were journalists reporting on various news stories in different countries.
I loved that game.
It was the thrill of traveling to different countries, learning about them, seeing different experiences.
And yes, I had followed up on that love of travel. But it was limited to 2-week vacations, 3 if I was lucky.
What if I traveled more frequently?
What if I had a way of earning a living which also scratched this itch of exploration?
Life was never going to be the same again, I knew that for sure.
It took a while to sort out practicalities when I got back to the UK, but I did.
I left the corporate world and started on my own business journey. That was 16 years ago.
Since then we have lived and worked in Antigua for a number of years, leaning to sail, owning a sailboat and living in Montenegro, Greece, the US, the Middle East, and traveling and exploring many parts of mainland Europe during that time too.
Dramatic change is possible and it often starts with the right question at the right time.
What would be the right question for you to consider right now?
